PODCAST INTRO! Feeling grounded and centered can be a real challenge, especially when living in places where one culture dominates and everything else is seen as “other.”

I’ve been thinking about how many stories I wished to read when I was younger that didn’t exist then but do now, because they’ve been written by my generation. From “A Place for Us” by Fatima Farheen Mirza to “When We Were Sisters” by Fatimah Asghar to “Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head” by Warsan Shire, all of these stories speak to my heart in a way I craved while growing up.

My poem ‘Adornment’ was a part of @poettreetown_a2 and in the window at @dzanc_house in Ypsi for all of April! I hope it gave something to the people who read (and listened) to it. There was something really special about seeing the poems all around Ypsi and Ann Arbor and taking a few intentional minutes to read them.

From Other to Center was dreamed up by four women—Aysha Jamali, Asha Noor, Anisa Jibrell, and Isra Daraiseh—who saw a need in building a sense of belonging and connection by drawing from their ancestral history. Founded in 2019, this project explores—through visual, artistic expression—the role of our ancestral identity in embodying our full selves.
